Jesus was a nonconformist, and He made big things happen. So now, I think its our turn to get out there and do something worthwhile and against the grain. don't just fit in with the crowd. Start your own crowd. Challenge beliefs. Question things. People will tell you that questioning is a sign of weakness, or the weak in faith. They are liars. Questioning is a sign of strength. Without question, there is not growth. without challenge, there are no answers. So do you have questions? ASK. Do you disagree with something? CHALLENGE. Are you confused about something? SEARCH FOR THE ANSWER. And don't let anyone stop you.

Jesus - The Ultimate Nonconformist
I was just reading Acts, and it got me thinking about Jesus. He was greatly disliked because his ideals didn't fit into the ideals of the Jewish culture of the time. He challenged their beliefs, and for that, people hated him. he was, in fact, the ultimate non-conformist. If he had just stuck with the crowd, following ideas and living life as everyone else did, he never would have changed anything. He put his life on the line to change the world as we knew it. So why is it that modern churches are so opposed to those who don't fit into their perfect life style? Why do so many people in modern churches have to be so judgmental, when we were called to be loving? Jesus loved. We are called to be world changers, as Jesus did. Why can people not see the beauty in people, instead of pointing out their flaws and judging them and outcasting them? Jesus called us to be accepting, loving, and nonjudgmental. The way I see it, people are not listening to the message of Christ with the right views. They are reading it to see what he disagrees with, when they should be reading it to see how to be loving and accepting.

I liek your thoughts, and get-out-and-love attitude ;)
ReplyDeleteHowever, I don't think Jesus was a non-conformist, or that we should be. Here's why:
A Nonconformist is someone who doesn't do the norm for the mere sake of being different. You can refuse to conform to something, and yet not be a nonconformist. Because a non-conformist is someone who refuses the norm no matter what it is. They believe its wrong to conform. Jesus didn't conform because he felt the norm was wrong. and I agree, a lot of "the norm" today is wrong. We shouldn't conform, but we shouldn't be non-conformists, because the right thing will always be the right thing. The problem isn't that we accept things (which is a nonconformist's view). The problem is that we sometimes accept the wrong things.
I hope that makes sense ;)
"Nonconformism is the refusal to conform to common standards, conventions, rules, customs, traditions, norms, or laws."

Yeah, I agree. Jesus was definitely unconventional in his actions. But at the same time, he didn't do anything wrong...ever. We are called to love, but at the same time, we cannot accept things that are morally wrong just because it is part of who someone is. You say that we should see the beauty in people and not point out their flaws just because they are different. But, Jesus didn't have any flaws. :)
ReplyDeleteI think calling someone out on something they are doing wrong can definitely be done in a loving way. That's all. Hope that all makes sense!
By the way, I'm loving the blog. I haven't done this in forever.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Jordan. Loving people doesn't mean silently watching while they ruin their life. You can lovingly tell people that something needs to change!
ReplyDeleteAs tobymac says... " 'Cause real friends are willing to intrude."
SOOO.... I think I need to do some clarifying...
ReplyDeleteBy 'nonconformist' i don't mean someone who intentionally goes against what is the norm. I mean to say someone who is willing to go against common beliefs to fight to get out what is right or good. In saying that we should be nonconformists, I am saying that we shouldn't try to blend into the crowd. I'm saying that we need to stand out, because there is not point in being a christian (aside from selfishness), if your going to blend in and live in the social standards that are our economy.
I also didn't mean to say that we should stand by and watch people suffer. I was stating that people tend to focus more on the flaws in people when they are Christians. A lot of people are changed for the better and for the worse when becoming Christians. I'm saying that when you just go around judging, you get nowhere.
I guess its all in the interpretation...

Okay, right, I figured that's pretty much what you meant. Its just that to be a nonconformist means to pretty much be a rebel, to go against the norm for no other reason than the heck of it. We don't "need to stand out from the crowd", we need to "do whats right." I just worry because when people realize a symbolizm between two things, they tend to get sidetracked. It isn't about "standing out" and "not caring what people think" and "not conforming". It's all about being like Jesus and doing what God's will is. I think its great that Jesus was tough enough to stand out, but if we glorify that too much, we forget that that was but a minuscule part to the actual things he did (preach, heal, die, etc.).
